Karratha Kite School teaches kiteboarding lessons in the beautiful surrounds of the Pilbara.

The main teaching spots we use are Dampier, Settlers Beach and Hearsons Cove.

Dampier

Hampton Harbour is the main kite spot in Karratha in Summer when the wind direction is predominantly Westerly.

Most of the local kiters rig up on the Hampton Harbour oval and walk up the beach to start. For beginners it is recommended to rig up on the South/Western aspect of the bay as it does get gusty on the oval and there are some rocky hazards to pass on the walk up the beach.

The Kite spots around Karratha have a large tidal range. Beginners will find this spot easiest for practicing board skills with a tide between 1.5 and 3m.

The typical Air/Water temperatures at this location:

· Average water temperature: 26.4 ; Min: 24.1, Max 28.4.

· Average air temperature: Mean Min July: 17 deg, Mean Max Feb: 36

Hearsons Cove

Hearsons Cove is the main kite spot for Karratha kiters in the winter season when the wind direction is a predominant Easterly in the mornings. Hearsons Cove is only a 20min drive from Karratha on the Burrup Peninsula.

Hearsons Cove does have a large tidal range, at low tide there can be a long walk out to the water which is worthwhile as you will find a flat kiting spot often all to yourself. At high tide the spot can be very choppy, getting in and out of the water can be tricky due to dumping waves and there are usually a few more kiters in the water.

For Beginners practicing board skills it is easiest when the tide is 1.5 - 3.2m.

 Air/Water temperatures

• Average air temperature: Mean Min July: 17

Settlers Beach

Settlers Beach is a 30min drive North of Karratha. It works best in winter on a North/North East or North Easterly wind.

Settlers Beach has a large tidal range, if you kite there on a medium tide you can find some beautiful flat lagoons,  at low tide there is a walk out to the water but once you get there you will have a flat water kite spot to yourself. On a high outgoing tide there are some small waves that form around the point.

It's a deep water spot a high tide and a shallow water spot at low tide.

If you are keen to explore, Settlers beach is the place to go.

Kiteboarding isn’t just an awesome sport….it is the best way to explore.
