Kiteboarding Lesson Structure:

The Kiteboarding Program is designed to introduce you to an amazing adventure sport in a structured safe way that respects individual preferences and styles.

During your lessons you will be taken through the following skills.

Discover Kiteboarding Level 1, 3 hour course:

  • Safe wind directions for kiting.
  • Identification of hazards.
  • Terminology of kiteboarding equipment.
  • Set-up of kiteboarding equipment.
  • Pre-flight check of equipment and settings.
  • How to use safety systems.
  • International kiteboarding communication signals.
  • Launch and land the kite as an assistant and to an assistant.
  • Control of the kite hooked into the harness.
  • Understand the de-power system and use the safety systems.
  • Advanced flying skills with the de-power kite.
  • Self land and recovery of bar and kite.

Discover Kiteboarding Level 2, 3 hour course:

  • Enter and exit the water independently and safely while controlling the kite.
  • Water re-launch the kite.
  • Body drag downwind.
  • Maintain correct kite position in the wind window.
  • Change directions to the left and right while body dragging.
  • Complete self rescue and full pack-down of gear.
  • Upwind body drag to recover board.
  • Upwind body drag holding board with one hand.
  • Enter and exit the water at the same point while upwind body dragging.
  • Know the power stroke for the water start.
  • Put the board on the feet and maintain the correct position for water start.
  • Water start in both directions and ride a short distance.
  • Learn to come to a controlled stop.
  • Understand weather forecast, tidal and wind effects.
  • Determine the wind strength, direction and quality.
  • Know right of way rules.
  • Know equipment set up and choice depending on weather conditions.

After 6 hours of lessons our goal is to ensure that all our beginner kiteboarders have an enjoyable time and have the skills to be safe when practicing kiteboarding. Kiteboarding takes practice – the progression through the kiteboarding lessons and the skills obtained will depend on each individuals ability. Once the above skills are mastered students can go on to practice the following skills.

  • Control speed by edging.
  • Toeside edging.
  • Consistent riding in all directions including upwind.
  • Riding amongst other riders and water users whilst respecting right of way rules.
  • Change of direction without stopping.
  • Make a toe side turn.
  • Risk assessment and awareness of the area.
  • Self Launch.
  • Know the theory and safety rules for jumping.
  • Land a basic jump.
